The Night of the Games

Ah well, so many interesting football matches last Wednesday! What to watch? England certainly – yes, I’m Swiss, but hey, I am a huge fans of the three lions!!! And what a great victory it was… it’s about time to almost forget about that terrible defeat at Wembley in 2007! Joachim Loew’s Germany was bland, pretty useless. What about the Swiss?

Wow, there I am in the south of the Provence without a TV in our house (so we watched the 2-2 of France in Romania in a fancy restaurant) and what happens? The Swiss win. Twice. First they win at home against Lithaunia, then the team of Othmar Hitzfeld scores big in Athens with a 2-1 against Greece. Still way to go for the qualification for South Africa 2010, but looking better now.

Not so in the European leagues, where all Swiss teams but FC Basel (in the champs league) dropped out without even the slightest chance for qualification and the FC Basel has not yet won a single point in its three matches against Donetzk, Sporting and Barcelona (two games were lost at home, the last one with a brutal 0-5 against the artists from Barcelona). A Swiss view

So yes, we had the Euro 2008 in our country. It was a great experience and a great tourney. Not for us Swiss though as our team played a terrible tournament, not counting the useless victory against the B-team from Portugal (and not for the Three Lions, that I missed the most!). The inevitable change was secured even before Euro 2008, as Ottmar Hitzfeld of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund fame could be won as new head coach.
