Leeds fail to progress

Last season, Leeds United had good runs in both the cups yet this coincided with the club very nearly throwing away promotion from League One.
Leeds went from leading the league, being nine points clear, to scraping second place by a point on the final day of the season.
This season, Simon Grayson’s side welcomed his former club Leicester to Elland Road in their Carling Cup second round tie and they went down to a last minute Steve Howard penalty to lose the match 2-1. Taking such a scalp will have boosted the Foxes who will take their place in the Carling Cup betting for the third round.
Leeds’ new goalscoring hero Davide Somma continued his hot streak by scoring his third goal in two games to give Leeds the lead. The South African striker found space in the area to guide Max Gradel’s pin point cross in with a nice header.
Former Leicester winger Gradel was making his first appearance of the season after his four game suspension for his red card on the final day of the last campaign. Gradel never really settled at Leicester despite his obvious ability but has looked a different player in West Yorkshire and was lively throughout the match.
Leicester levelled after some good build up play set up Richie Wellens, who finished nicely past Shane Higgs in the Leeds goal.
The winner came in fairly bizarre fashion in the final stages. With no-one around him, Leeds defender Neil Collins misjudged the bounce of the ball and handled to give referee Eddie Ilderton no choice but to award the penalty. Howard made no mistake from the spot to send Leicester through to the next round.
Over the 90 minutes, Leicester probably deserved the win and will go into the draw for the third round when the Premier League’s big boys enter the mix. Meanwhile, Leeds will now focus on staying in the Championship. With this in mind, how they will fare in the FA Cup betting, and how seriously they will take the competition, will make for interesting viewing
