Who can fire their team to glory?

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010, 7:04 pm

Whilst rival fans may be forced to agree that Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Carlos Tevez are amongst the top strikers plying their trade in the Premier League, will the destination of the Premier League title confirm who is top dog out of these superstar strikers?

With the Big Four looking likely to become the Big Five or Six (depending on how well Spurs cope with the demands of Champions League football) this season, we could see the top teams being separated by only the tiniest of margins. This means that the man who tops the scoring charts may well have been able to fire his side to the top of the league by virtue of his goal scoring. This also means that when consulting the English Premiership betting it may be worth considering which side will possess the Premier League’s top goal-getter.

Whilst this may seem like hyperbole, it is demonstrated by the fact that Drogba has already been able to help power his side to a +12 goal difference (with Chelsea also securing a 100% haul of six points), whilst United and Arsenal have largely been without their star strikers so far and have picked up just four points each, and a far less impressive goal difference too. Clearly the importance of having the top man up front is already being demonstrated two games into the season and this is also expressed in the football betting.

With the arrival of Mario Balotelli adding yet more competition to the list of top goalscorers in the league, the ability of these star men to stay fit may be the determining factor in deciding the destination of the Premier League trophy come the season’s end. For this reason, should we already be discounting Arsenal and Liverpool from being potential champions, with both clubs having immensely talented, but very injury prone, players as their top strikers?
