United bank on Berbatov

When a player is given the number nine shirt at Manchester United, that player is expected to score goals on a regular basis. After a disappointing return of nine Premiership goals last season, Dimitar Berbatov will be looking to get in amongst the goals this campaign.
Nobody can argue against the Bulgarian’s ability, his work rate is a different issue though. With Wayne Rooney grabbing the majority of the headlines last season, Berbatov often cut a disconsolate figure and didn’t even threaten to have an impact on the Premier League Odds for top goal scorer.
It was widely expected that Berbatov would be on his way this summer. Teams in Italy and Spain were said to be interested in the former Spurs striker. After impressing so far on United’s pre-season tour of the USA however, it looks as though Ferguson is going to stick with Berbatov. He scored one and set-up two in the friendly against Celtic and Ferguson came out backing the front-man to succeed this season.
Since his big money move from Tottenham, Berbatov has shown glimpses of real quality. 26 goals in 86 games for the Red Devils isn’t enough though, and this season could be his last chance to impress the Old Trafford fans. Does this mean you should place a Premier League bet on him getting ten goals by Christmas though?
United have added Javier Hernandez to their squad this summer, increasing the young attacking threat already at the club. Hernandez will join Danny Welbeck, Federico Macheda and Mame Biram Diouf as the young strikers all look to establish themselves as Wayne Rooney’s partner.
With Berbatov having recently retired from international football, his focus will be purely United based. If he can get the fans on his side early in the season, then Berbatov could still become a hero at Old Trafford.
