AC Milan 1994

For this weeks offering I thought we would re-visit one of the all time great sides. AC Milan, under the guidance of a certain Fabio Capello, swept all before them in the early 90s. That included an emphatic Champions League win over Barcelona at the Olympic Stadium in Athens on May 18 1994, a game which is often considered to be one of the greatest ever performances by a side in the Champions League.
Not that the preparation to the game was befitting of such a great side. Legendary Italian defenders Franco Baresi and Alessandro Costacurta were both suspended, while UEFA’s three foreigner rule meant Capello was forced to leave out a trio of world class players in Florin Raducioiu, Jean-Pierre Papin and Brian Laudrup.
Not that it mattered however as Milan stormed into a 2-0 lead by half time thanks to a brace by Daniele Massaro. It was 3 goals just two minutes into the second half thanks to Dejan Savicevic. Marcel Desially completed the rout with a fourth just before the hour. Desailly made history himself by becoming the first player to win the trophy in consecutive years after triumphing with Marseille in 1993.
That season Milan also lifted their 14th Serie A title, finishing three points clear of second-placed Juventus. It was their third title in a row and would win it again two years later. To date they have won 17 titles in their history, level with city rivals Inter, but still well behind Juventus, who have 27 titles to their name.
Milan played in their all-white away strip, which historically they use in finals of the European Cup and Champions League. It was made by Lotto and had red trim on the sleeves, with a red and black trim around the collar. Where many sides have the club crest on the shirt, this Milan shirt had the Scudetto badge, which incorpates the Italian flag. Above it was a single star – celebrating winning 10 Serie A titles, achieved in 1979. Their usual shirt sponsor was Motta, but in this game they wore plain shirts. The shorts were all white and the socks were white with a thin black and red trim.
