Man City 1974

The future looks bright at Eastlands. The richest club in the world has invested heavily over the summer and are now the talk of football as we all watch and wonder whether Mark Hughes Harlem Globetrotters approach to football will actually work.
But City also have a history, so I thought I would recall a shirt worn on one of the most famous (infamous) days in Manchester’s history.
The 1973-74 season had been an unspectacular one for City. A 2-1 defeat by Wolves at Wembley in the final of the league cup was followed by an average 14th place finish. But it was the last day of the season that would be the most memorable game for City fans.
Struggling Manchester United were battling to stay in the division just six years after lifting the European Cup. The club standing in their way at Old Trafford? Manchester City.
City put the final nail in United’s coffin with a famous one nil win at the Theatre of Dreams, with ex-Manchester United legend Denis Law scoring a back heeled goal against his former club. Thinking that was the goal that relegated his former side Law refused to celebrate and was substituted soon after. However Birmingham City’s victory meant United’s fate was sealed regardless of their match against City.
The kit City wore was made by Umbro with the Umbro crest on the lift breast with the old Manchester City crest (worn between 1972 and 1997) in the unusual position in the centre of the shirt. The club also wore a special shirt for the League Cup final featuring the crest of the city of Manchester. This was a tradition that stemmed from the pride of City representing Manchester in a major final. The crest is very similar to the one they use today, which was introduced in 1997.
