Man United acknowledge the past with new kit

Friday, July 10th, 2009, 2:46 pm

gtAlongside the shock of Michael Owen in a Man United shirt was the sight of their new kit ahead of the 2009/10 Premier League season.

United have based some of their recent kits on ones from their illustrious past. Their 2007 effort had a very retro feel about it while a commemorative kit was worn to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster in 2008.

They have given a similar nod to the past with this year’s effort, made by Nike once again. Across the front of the red shirt is a large black chevron across the chest. On the back of the shirt is an engineered mesh, which is a series of small chevrons, while found in the side seam is a small label that reads ‘The Theatre of Dreams Since 1910.’

The shirt is to commemorate 100 years at Old Trafford and is based on the shirt worn by the side that won the 1909 FA Cup, though on that occasion the shirt was white with a red chevron across the front.

Back in 1909 United and their opponents Bristol City were making their first ever appearance in an FA Cup final which was played at Crystal Palace. A single Sandy Turnbull goal was enough to give United victory on that day and give them the first of their 11 FA Cup victories to date.

The new shirt will undoubtedly sell in its thousands due to the huge support United has across the globe. However initial feedback to the kit has been mixed, with some fans unhappy that it resembles a rugby league style kit or one worn by American footballers. Make up your own  mind… see it and maybe buy it here!
