European Champions – Barcelona kit 1992

It is perhaps fitting that in a week where Barca captured their third European crown in spectacular style we look back to the kit they wore when they won their first ever European Cup in 1992.
I say wore, but in fact they actually played in their away kit against Italian side Sampdoria at Wembley Stadium. But upon victory they swapped shirts and donned their more traditional home kit to lift the famous trophy and parade round the pitch in front of their fans.
The class of ‘92 became known as the ‘dream team’ because of the sheer number of world class players in the side, all under the careful stewardship of Dutch legend Johan Cruyff.
Notable players included Danish winger Michael Laudrup, temperamental Bulgarian striker Hristo Stoichkov and Dutch centre-half Ronald Koeman – whose spectacular free-kick won the game for Barca in extra-time. Alongside those superstar foreign players were Spaniards Albert Ferrer, captain Andoni Zubizarreta and Josep Guardiola who, of course, would go on and manage the club to treble winning glory in 2009.
The kit they wore was made by Meyba, who made Barca’s kits for ten years between 1982 and 1992. It featured an open collar, the club’s traditional thick blue and maroon vertical stripes – which can also be found on the club’s badge.
The away shirt was a far more garish orange with a blue v-neck collar and red and blue sashes on either arm – I can see why they changed kits to lift the trophy!
Kappa took over the manufacture of Barca’s kit from the following season until 1998 when current kit-makers Nike took over.
The Barcelona shirt was also notable for not having a sponsor. The club have famously refused to put a sponsor’s logo on their shirts ever since their formation, a rare stance nowadays with sponsorship playing such a big role on football club’s finances.
However in 2006 the club signed a deal with UNICEF allowing their logo to go on the shirts. But instead of receiving payment Barca actually make an annual donation towards UNICEF’s humanitarian aids programmes.
