A Swiss view

Thursday, September 25th, 2008, 11:41 pm

So yes, we had the Euro 2008 in our country. It was a great experience and a great tourney. Not for us Swiss though as our team played a terrible tournament, not counting the useless victory against the B-team from Portugal (and not for the Three Lions, that I missed the most!). The inevitable change was secured even before Euro 2008, as Ottmar Hitzfeld of Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund fame could be won as new head coach. Expectations for the world cup qualification were high. Very high.

Most football fans may have wondered about our result against Luxembourg but honestly, what a horrible team effort by the Swiss it was. I don’t remember all the details of that fatal 1:2 – intentionally deleted from the memory – but we had something like five not even real chances to score…! Yes, expectations were high. Too high? World cup 2010 seems farther than ever. The consequences are absolutely clear: the Swiss have to win the big games against the Greek – and all the remaining matches against the so called smaller countries. Honestly, there really are no small countries anymore. But loosing a home game against Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands or Andorra?

But no, there is even more than the matches of the Swiss team during and after Euro 2008 that left fans of our “Nati” with a downbeat, we’re also using one of the worst shirts ever, something we share with our Euro co-host and neighbour Austria. It does not only look bland, it feels like wearing an old potato sack too. Let’s hope for a change here as well!

So, thanks to Superphil, you will be treated with a look at Swiss football (and more) here from time to time and of course I’ll be happy to share my views of shirts from and around our small country. And hey, there are even six Swiss players in English teams. Let’s have a look at them too from time to time.

Cheers!
